Frequently asked questions
Check that the main power switch is on, and that the boat’s battery/batteries have sufficient voltage.
Check that you have entered the correct PIN code. If the correct PIN code is entered, the Start Panel’s LED will flash GREEN.
Check that the gear selectors are in neutral (N).
Check that the manual kill switch lanyard is correctly fitted if it is in use.
If your boat is equipped with several engines, each engine can be individually started / stopped. Please see chapter: “Start the engines individually” in the user manual for further instructions.

Using the Start Panel, you can turn on the ignition and
start/stop the engine(s) without using a traditional key.
- Check that all main power switches are turned “ON”.
- Enter the PIN code (the factory-set code is 1-2-3-4) (LED flashes GREEN every 3 seconds).
- Press the “ON/OFF” button to turn on the ignition (LED flashes ORANGE).
- Press the “START” button to start the engine(s).
- If you have a remote control (2-button or 5-button FOB) connected to the system and this FOB is not detected, a warning sound will be heard. (LED flashes ORANGE).
NOTE! This is to make you aware that the wireless kill switch function is not activated, since the system has no connection with the FOB.
- Press a button on the FOB to connect it.
- The warning sound on the Start Panel stops. (LED shows GREEN)
- If you do not have the FOB with you, the beeping will stop after 5 beeps.
(The LED will stop flashing ORANGE and then show RED)
NOTE! In this case the kill switch function will not be active, but the boat can still be used as normal. Remember to use the manual kill switch lanyard.
- Press the “ON/OFF” button to stop the engine(s) and turn off the ignition.
NOTE: If your boat was delivered with the standard PIN code 1-2-3-4, remember to change it to a code of your own choosing to prevent unauthorised persons from starting the boat. See how under “Changing the PIN code” later in this booklet.
NOTE: If the “ON/OFF” button is not pressed within 60 seconds of entering the PIN, the panel will lock and the PIN code must be entered again.
NOTE: The Start Panel has backlighting in the buttons. The backlighting turns on when the main power is switched on and then each time a button is pressed. The backlighting turns off after 60 seconds.
The Start Panel – Individual start/stop of the engines. (with 2 or more engines)
- Check that all main power switches are turned “ON”.
- Enter the PIN code (the factory-set code is 1-2-3-4) (LED flashes GREEN every 3 seconds).
- Press the “ON/OFF” button to turn on the ignition (LED flashes ORANGE).
- The following depends on how many engines you have on the boat.
If you have 2, 3 or 4 engines, buttons 1-4 will correspond to each individual engine. To start engine 1, press and hold the “1” button, press and hold “2” for engine 2 and so on.
Press and hold the relevant button to stop the engine again.
The 2-button FOB can be used for remote
start and stop of the engine(s). When the FOB is used
to turn on the ignition, there is no need to
enter a PIN code.
The FOB also works as a wireless kill switch.
Start/stop with the 2-button FOB.
- Check that the main power switches are turned “ON”.
- Press the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB to turn on the ignition (The Start Panel LED shows ORANGE)
- Press and hold the “START” button on the FOB for at least 2 seconds to start the engine(s). (The Start Panel LED shows GREEN)
- The wireless MOB is now activated. In the event of a fall overboard, the engine(s) will stop.
NOTE! Remember to keep the FOB on you at all times.
- Press and hold the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB for at least 2 seconds to stop the engine(s) and turn off the ignition.
NOTE! When starting from the FOB, all engines start sequentially, and when stopping from the FOB, all stop simultaneously. Individual start and stop can only be done from the Start Panel.
The 5-button FOB can be used for remote-controlled
start/stop of the engine(s) in addition to trim/tilt
(or other wireless functions). When the FOB is
used to turn on the ignition, there is no
need to enter a PIN code.
The FOB also works as a wireless kill switch (ECOS).
Start/stop with the 5-button FOB.
- Check that the main power switches are turned “ON”.
- Press the “START/STOP” button on the FOB once to turn on the ignition
(the Start Panel LED lights up ORANGE) - Press and hold the “START/STOP” button on the FOB for at least 2 seconds to start the engine(s). (the Start Panel LED lights up GREEN)
- The wireless MOB is now activated. In the event of a fall overboard, the engine(s) will stop.
NOTE! Remember to keep the FOB on you at all times.
- Press and hold the “START/STOP” button on the FOB for at least 2 seconds to stop the engine(s) and turn off the ignition.
NOTE! When starting from the FOB, all engines start sequentially, and when stopping from the FOB, they all stop simultaneously. Individual starting and stopping can only be done from the Start Panel.
If the person wearing the FOB falls overboard, the system will switch off the engines and turn off the ignition.
In a MOB situation, the system will enter ALARM mode.
- The engines are stopped and the ignition is turned off. A warning signal sounds
(The Start Panel LED flashes RED)
- After 15 seconds the warning sound stops (The Start Panel LED shows ORANGE)
- OVERRIDE mode is activated and the ignition is turned on automatically. The person remaining on board can now start the engine(s) and recover the person who fell overboard.
NOTE! Remember to put the gear shifter in Neutral (N) before starting the engine(s).
- Once the person has been recovered, press one of the buttons on the FOB to re-establish the connection between the FOB and the Start Panel. (The Start Panel LED shows GREEN)
NOTE! If you attempt to start while the gear shifter is in gear, the Start Panel may “think” the engine(s) are started when they are not. To fix this, put the gear shifter in Neutral (N), press “ON/OFF” on the panel once to “turn off” the ignition, then press “ON/OFF” again to turn the ignition back on and press “START” to start the engine(s).
- Check that the main power switches are turned “ON”.
- Press and hold the “ARROW DOWN” button on the FOB to tilt the engine down.
- Press and hold the “ARROW UP” button on the FOB to tilt the engine up.
NOTE! The FOB has a “key lock” that requires you to press “ARROW UP” or “ARROW DOWN” for 3 seconds to release the function. The key lock is re-activated 15 seconds after the last key press, and you must again press and hold the button for 3 seconds to unlock the function.
Other remote-controlled functions
Some systems are set up with other functions on “ARROW UP” / “ARROW DOWN” and “ARROW RIGHT” / “ARROW LEFT”. For example anchor windlass, bow thruster, lights, etc.
See the supplier’s separate instructions for what applies to your boat.
Changing the PIN code on the Start Panel is easy. The code can consist of 4-6 digits. Remember that if you use a FOB, it must be paired again after changing the PIN.
1. Remember to write down the new PIN code before you start.
2. Check that the main power switch is turned “ON”.
3. Enter the existing PIN (the factory default code is 1-2-3-4) (LED flashes GREEN)
4. Press and hold the “ON/OFF” button on the Start Panel for approximately 5 seconds. (LED flashes BLUE)
5. Press the “2” key to change the PIN code. (LED flashes rapidly ORANGE)
6. Enter your new PIN code. It can consist of 4-6 digits.
7. Press “START” on the Start Panel to confirm the entry. (LED flashes rapidly GREEN)
8. Enter the new PIN code once more and confirm with the “START” button. (LED lights GREEN, acknowledges with 2 beeps and then flashes BLUE)
NB! If you enter a different PIN code, the LED will light RED and give a long beep. Wait until the LED flashes ORANGE again and continue from step 6.
9. The PIN code has been changed. (LED flashes BLUE)
NB! If you have a FOB, it must now be paired again using steps 10-13, otherwise you can continue from step 14.
10. Press the “1” key to pair the FOB. (LED flashes rapidly ORANGE)
11. Press and hold the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB.
12. After approximately 3 seconds, the Start Panel’s LED changes from ORANGE to GREEN and acknowledges with 2 beeps.
13. Release the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB.
14. The FOB is paired. (The Start Panel’s LED flashes BLUE)
15. Press the “ON/OFF” button on the Start Panel to exit PROGRAMMING mode.
16. Remember to test that the FOB is paired correctly.
The FOB’s battery has a theoretical service life of approximately 300 hours of use. Several factors can affect the actual service life, and we therefore recommend that the battery in the FOB is replaced every season (preferably when launching in the spring). If the battery has not been replaced, the FOB will signal low battery before it runs completely flat. When the battery is low, the LED in the FOB will flash RED every 3 seconds (in the “ON/OFF” button on the 2-button FOB and in the “ARROW DOWN” key on the 5-button FOB). In that case the battery should be replaced as soon as possible. Use a good-quality CR2032 battery.
1. To replace the battery, turn the FOB over and use a coin or similar to open the battery cover.
2. Turn “anti-clockwise” to open the cover.
3. Turn past the “OPEN” point to “unscrew” the cover from the FOB itself.
4. Make sure the battery is inserted correctly. The “+” side should face outwards.
5. Screw the cover back into place.
NB! We recommend that you always keep a spare battery (and e.g. a coin to open the battery cover) in the boat.

· The CoastKey system must only be used on board the vessel it is fitted in and within a radius of 6-10 metres from the helm position.
· The FOB must always be activated and attached to the captain for MOB (Man Overboard) to work.
· If you have several remotes (FOBs), only one must be active while under way.
· The remote (FOB) should only be in the water in a genuine man-overboard situation.
· The CoastKey system will only stop the engine(s) if the captain falls overboard with the FOB attached to them. CoastKey will NOT stop the engine(s) automatically if you fall over on board the boat.
· The FOB unit is designed to float if it falls into the water. Note that adding weight attached to the FOB unit will cause the FOB unit to sink.
· If there are several wireless systems on board the vessel, this may affect the operating stability of the CoastKey system.
· External radio interference may affect the operating stability of the CoastKey system.
· The CoastKey system may interfere with electronically operated medical equipment. Contact your authorised healthcare professional and carefully read the instructions from the manufacturer of your medical devices before using the CoastKey system near pacemakers or other similar electronically operated medical equipment.
· The FOB must not be near metal surfaces or carbon during use, as this will degrade the radio signals.
· If the system behaves abnormally, you must switch off the main power switch immediately.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The CoastKey system generates, uses and radiates radio frequency (RF) energy, and if it is not installed and used correctly in accordance with the instructions, it may cause interference to radio communications and other electronic equipment.
It is not permitted to disassemble or modify the hardware or software of the CoastKey system. CoastKey devices are designed and manufactured to communicate only with CoastKey devices. External RF signals may affect incorrectly installed or inadequately shielded electronic operating systems, entertainment systems and personal medical equipment.
While most modern electronic equipment is shielded against external RF signals, you should contact the manufacturer or contact CoastKey for support. For personal medical equipment (such as pacemakers, cardiac stimulators and hearing aids), contact your doctor or the manufacturer to find out whether they are adequately shielded against external RF signals.
In the unlikely event that you experience interference with other electronic devices, you can contact customer support at: www.coastkey.no or contact the manufacturer of the respective electronic device. The CoastKey system must not be used in areas where you are not permitted to use mobile devices. There are some places where RF signals may pose a hazard, such as healthcare facilities and construction sites. If you are unsure, look around for signs indicating that two-way radios or mobile phones should be switched off, or simply stop using the device until you are away from these areas.
The operating stability may be affected by signals from other wireless systems present on the vessel. The operating stability may also be affected by signals from external electromagnetic sources.
Portable electronic devices, including CoastKey devices, emit radio signals that may interfere with aircraft communication or aircraft control, navigation and other electronic equipment on board, and should be switched off during flights.
OPERATING YOUR BOAT RESPONSIBLY
· Operate the boat responsibly.
· You are responsible for the safe and proper operation of the vessel.
· Check the general condition of the boat before leaving the harbour and ensure that all applicable safety equipment is operational.
· Review the operation of the CoastKey system with all passengers on the vessel. Make sure they understand how to restart the boat in the event of a “man overboard” situation.
· Always follow all operating instructions from the boat manufacturer.
· Know and follow all local maritime rules and regulations.
· Do not overload your boat.
· Life jackets must always be worn.
· Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol.
· Always check the local weather forecast before a trip.
· Complete a trip plan before boarding the boat and share it with a trusted person who will notify the Coastguard, or another rescue agency, if you do not return or check in as planned. If your plans change or you will be delayed, inform the person holding your trip plan.
· Do not leave the helm unattended.
· The CoastKey system is intended to enhance your safety while operating the boat, but it does not relieve you of responsibility for the safe operation of the vessel. The system is not intended to fully replace the physical kill cord.
IMPORTANT PRODUCT AND SAFETY INFORMATION
The CoastKey system will switch off the engine within 2 seconds and give an alarm signal if the captain falls into the water or is outside the wireless range. The CoastKey system will not switch off the engine if the captain falls over on board the boat within the wireless range. In this case the captain can manually switch off the engine by pressing and holding the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB. Always test the wireless range on board the boat before use. The wireless range may vary from 6 – 30 metres depending on the wireless environment around the boat.
Always make sure that the system is working properly before leaving the quay (see the user manual for these instructions).
Always check the battery level of the FOB before using the vessel (see the user manual for more information).
OTHER SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Small parts contained in the CoastKey system and its accessories may present a choking hazard to small children.
The product contains a CR2032 Lithium Metal Button Cell Battery. Product category: Marine electronics.
Our product has been tested to comply with FCC standards.
If you use any medical device such as a pacemaker or cardiac stimulator, consult with your physician or healthcare professional and read the instructions from the manufacturer before use.
Credit cards, hard drives and other devices that store data magnetically may also be sensitive to magnetic or electromagnetic fields and should not be placed near this device.
CE DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY
CoastKey equipment and accessories are designed to the highest industry standards for use in the recreational marine environment. The CoastKey system conforms to the appropriate Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) regulations, but correct installation is required to ensure that performance is not compromised.
We highly recommend installation by a professional.
RECYCLING
Make sure you dispose of or recycle all CoastKey devices/batteries in accordance with your local laws and regulations.
THE IGNITION DOES NOT TURN ON WITH THE FOB: ·
- Check that the main power switch is on and that the boat battery/batteries have sufficient voltage.
- Check that you are within radio range (max 10 metres) of the Start Panel location.
- If the ignition is not activated from the FOB, press the centre button on the FOB to see whether any LEDs light up. If not, the FOB battery may be flat and needs replacing. See page 18 (battery type: CR2032 lithium).
- Check that the FOB is correctly paired with the Start Panel by pressing and holding the “START/STOP” button on the 5-button FOB or the “ON/OFF” button on the 2-button FOB. If the LED on the FOB flashes RED rapidly, the FOB is not paired.
THE ENGINE(S) WILL NOT START WITH THE FOB:
- Check that the main power switch is on and that the boat battery/batteries have sufficient voltage.
- Check that the gear selector is in Neutral (N).
- Check that the manual kill switch lanyard is correctly fitted.
- Check that you are within radio range (max 10 metres) of the Start Panel location.
- If the ignition is not activated from the FOB, press the centre button on the FOB to see whether any LEDs light up. If not, the FOB battery may be flat and needs replacing. See page 18 (battery type: CR2032 lithium).
THE ENGINE WILL NOT START FROM THE START PANEL AFTER YOU HAVE ENTERED THE PIN:

NB! If you have a FOB, it must now be paired again using steps 10-13, otherwise you can continue from step 14.
10. Press the “1” key to pair the FOB. (LED flashes rapidly ORANGE)
11. Press and hold the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB.
12. After approximately 3 seconds, the Start Panel’s LED changes from ORANGE to GREEN and acknowledges with 2 beeps.
13. Release the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB.
14. The FOB is paired. (The Start Panel’s LED flashes BLUE)
15. Press the “ON/OFF” button on the Start Panel to exit PROGRAMMING mode.
16. Remember to test that the FOB is paired correctly.
The FOB’s battery has a theoretical service life of approximately 300 hours of use. Several factors can affect the actual service life, and we therefore recommend that the battery in the FOB is replaced every season (preferably when launching in the spring). If the battery has not been replaced, the FOB will signal low battery before it runs completely flat. When the battery is low, the LED in the FOB will flash RED every 3 seconds (in the “ON/OFF” button on the 2-button FOB and in the “ARROW DOWN” key on the 5-button FOB). In that case the battery should be replaced as soon as possible. Use a good-quality CR2032 battery.
1. To replace the battery, turn the FOB over and use a coin or similar to open the battery cover.
2. Turn “anti-clockwise” to open the cover.
3. Turn past the “OPEN” point to “unscrew” the cover from the FOB itself.
4. Make sure the battery is inserted correctly. The “+” side should face outwards.
5. Screw the cover back into place.
NB! We recommend that you always keep a spare battery (and e.g. a coin to open the battery cover) in the boat.

· The CoastKey system must only be used on board the vessel it is fitted in and within a radius of 6-10 metres from the helm position.
· The FOB must always be activated and attached to the captain for MOB (Man Overboard) to work.
· If you have several remotes (FOBs), only one must be active while under way.
· The remote (FOB) should only be in the water in a genuine man-overboard situation.
· The CoastKey system will only stop the engine(s) if the captain falls overboard with the FOB attached to them. CoastKey will NOT stop the engine(s) automatically if you fall over on board the boat.
· The FOB unit is designed to float if it falls into the water. Note that adding weight attached to the FOB unit will cause the FOB unit to sink.
· If there are several wireless systems on board the vessel, this may affect the operating stability of the CoastKey system.
· External radio interference may affect the operating stability of the CoastKey system.
· The CoastKey system may interfere with electronically operated medical equipment. Contact your authorised healthcare professional and carefully read the instructions from the manufacturer of your medical devices before using the CoastKey system near pacemakers or other similar electronically operated medical equipment.
· The FOB must not be near metal surfaces or carbon during use, as this will degrade the radio signals.
· If the system behaves abnormally, you must switch off the main power switch immediately.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The CoastKey system generates, uses and radiates radio frequency (RF) energy, and if it is not installed and used correctly in accordance with the instructions, it may cause interference to radio communications and other electronic equipment.
It is not permitted to disassemble or modify the hardware or software of the CoastKey system. CoastKey devices are designed and manufactured to communicate only with CoastKey devices. External RF signals may affect incorrectly installed or inadequately shielded electronic operating systems, entertainment systems and personal medical equipment.
While most modern electronic equipment is shielded against external RF signals, you should contact the manufacturer or contact CoastKey for support. For personal medical equipment (such as pacemakers, cardiac stimulators and hearing aids), contact your doctor or the manufacturer to find out whether they are adequately shielded against external RF signals.
In the unlikely event that you experience interference with other electronic devices, you can contact customer support at: www.coastkey.no or contact the manufacturer of the respective electronic device. The CoastKey system must not be used in areas where you are not permitted to use mobile devices. There are some places where RF signals may pose a hazard, such as healthcare facilities and construction sites. If you are unsure, look around for signs indicating that two-way radios or mobile phones should be switched off, or simply stop using the device until you are away from these areas.
The operating stability may be affected by signals from other wireless systems present on the vessel. The operating stability may also be affected by signals from external electromagnetic sources.
Portable electronic devices, including CoastKey devices, emit radio signals that may interfere with aircraft communication or aircraft control, navigation and other electronic equipment on board, and should be switched off during flights.
OPERATING YOUR BOAT RESPONSIBLY
· Operate the boat responsibly.
· You are responsible for the safe and proper operation of the vessel.
· Check the general condition of the boat before leaving the harbour and ensure that all applicable safety equipment is operational.
· Review the operation of the CoastKey system with all passengers on the vessel. Make sure they understand how to restart the boat in the event of a “man overboard” situation.
· Always follow all operating instructions from the boat manufacturer.
· Know and follow all local maritime rules and regulations.
· Do not overload your boat.
· Life jackets must always be worn.
· Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol.
· Always check the local weather forecast before a trip.
· Complete a trip plan before boarding the boat and share it with a trusted person who will notify the Coastguard, or another rescue agency, if you do not return or check in as planned. If your plans change or you will be delayed, inform the person holding your trip plan.
· Do not leave the helm unattended.
· The CoastKey system is intended to enhance your safety while operating the boat, but it does not relieve you of responsibility for the safe operation of the vessel. The system is not intended to fully replace the physical kill cord.
IMPORTANT PRODUCT AND SAFETY INFORMATION
The CoastKey system will switch off the engine within 2 seconds and give an alarm signal if the captain falls into the water or is outside the wireless range. The CoastKey system will not switch off the engine if the captain falls over on board the boat within the wireless range. In this case the captain can manually switch off the engine by pressing and holding the “ON/OFF” button on the FOB. Always test the wireless range on board the boat before use. The wireless range may vary from 6 – 30 metres depending on the wireless environment around the boat.
Always make sure that the system is working properly before leaving the quay (see the user manual for these instructions).
Always check the battery level of the FOB before using the vessel (see the user manual for more information).

Small parts contained in the CoastKey system and its accessories may present a choking hazard to small children.

THE IGNITION DOES NOT TURN ON WITH THE FOB: ·
- Check that the main power switch is on and that the boat battery/batteries have sufficient voltage.
- Check that you are within radio range (max 10 metres) of the Start Panel location.
- If the ignition is not activated from the FOB, press the centre button on the FOB to see whether any LEDs light up. If not, the FOB battery may be flat and needs replacing. See page 18 (battery type: CR2032 lithium).
- Check that the FOB is correctly paired with the Start Panel by pressing and holding the “START/STOP” button on the 5-button FOB or the “ON/OFF” button on the 2-button FOB. If the LED on the FOB flashes RED rapidly, the FOB is not paired.
THE ENGINE(S) WILL NOT START WITH THE FOB:
- Check that the main power switch is on and that the boat battery/batteries have sufficient voltage.
- Check that the gear selector is in Neutral (N).
- Check that the manual kill switch lanyard is correctly fitted.
- Check that you are within radio range (max 10 metres) of the Start Panel location.
- If the ignition is not activated from the FOB, press the centre button on the FOB to see whether any LEDs light up. If not, the FOB battery may be flat and needs replacing. See page 18 (battery type: CR2032 lithium).
THE ENGINE WILL NOT START FROM THE START PANEL AFTER YOU HAVE ENTERED THE PIN:
- Check that the main power switch is on and that the boat battery/batteries have sufficient voltage.
- Check that you have entered the correct PIN code. When the correct PIN code is entered, the Start Panel LED will flash GREEN.
- Check that the gear selector is in Neutral (N).
- Check that the manual kill switch lanyard is correctly fitted.
